First things first – can you please introduce yourself and your role in Out to Sea Split?
Hi I’m Sam, I’ll be honest my role is a little vague and don’t think you could fit it all on a piece of paper but I am basically the co-founder of Out to Sea Split.
Out to Sea is a total vibe! What inspired the idea behind it?
Honestly there was no one particular moment that really stood out and made us want to start this. I guess Split is seen as a big party destination but (in my opinion) it lacks variety for options to party. You have your standard bars, bar crawls, night clubs and everything; to which I’ve done a few seasons of promoting for all of the above before starting the boat parties, but it lacked anything that was like that once-in-a-lifetime party you know? There are also those all inclusive options you can get for Blue Lagoon Tours but again it’s not quite the party we were looking for. After learning the ins and outs of tourism in Split, we realised we needed a floating club and that’s what we provide, also we wanted a place where people could really let their hair down and party and let loose.
So why Split? What made you go “Split’s the place” for hosting boat parties?
Again, I feel like I kind of answered this in the previous question but to elaborate; I have been here since 2020 and since then have been to some pretty cool party destinations around Europe and the world. Places like Brazil, the Greek Islands and Central America all had parties that lasted days on end, you could start and stop whenever you wanted to. Day parties is one thing we felt Split didn’t really have, well at least to the same extent. Split for me was the first place to feel like home after leaving New Zealand six years ago and I love the community where everybody around town knows each other and that’s what really helped push us to host these parties here, the support of our friends.
We know you have amazing parties, but we want to know more. Can you give us a glimpse into what makes them so epic?
I wish I could give you the answer to this, I literally don’t know myself. At Out to Sea Split we really pride ourselves on having an incredible team and family environment, so many people daily tell us that this is the best boat party they’ve ever done and sometimes even the best day outthey’ve ever had which is super humbling to hear, this makes it all worth it. We take our time to really get to know as many of the guests as possible and we make sure to hire a really professional but friendly and caring team, who like to offer recommendations to make someone’s whole holiday better. I would put it down firstly to the amazing atmosphere we create and the core team we hire, for example we have had the same DJ since our first ever party and some of our foreign staff have been with us for years.
How has been your experience with Croatia so far?
Honestly it’s definitely had its ups and downs but I wouldn’t change it for anything. Learning the language has been tough but Split is now home. I think the most important thing I’ve learned is to not come here and try to change anything too drastically but instead to comply and build relationships with those around you and gather their support. It’s not the easiest place to be a foreigner and being involved in something like this but this country has really opened my eyes and has shown me a way of life that I love; I could never go back to a fast paced hectic lifestyle again.
Croatia’s nightlife is wild. What’s your take on Croatians when it comes to partying?
Yes, Croatia’s nightlife is wild, but not in the same way as you’d think. Balkan music and Balkan parties aren’t something I’ve necessarily adapted to but it is definitely something that everyone should experience in their lifetimes, oh and a Croatian wedding also! There are some party places I have really yet to visit like Zrce, Zadar and the north of the country which are still on the list, though it’s pretty tough to get away from our daily parties though. There is also the slight intimidation factor too, however I’ve found that after sharing a couple of shots with locals they treat you like family.
Alright, now spill the tea – what’s one of the craziest, most unforgettable moments from last season?
There’s a lot to choose from honestly, nothing really that we hide from the public but I think one of the top moments from last season was actually starting our second company Split After Dark, a concept that we invented and believe that we are the first in the world to do something like this. While the daily parties run from April till October, Split After Dark ran from June through early September and was literally selling outfrom day one. To keep it brief, our day boat would dock at 20:00, we would then clean up and head back to our meeting point Jimmy Bar for 20:30 to start the night parties. It’s a simple concept but it worked a charm and was cheaper than any other nightlife alternative. Basically we do check in and one hour of drinking games from 20:30, then we board the boat at 21:30 – pitch black dark, boat covered in neon lights and smoke machines going and obviously no swimming. It really was just like a floating club but better, then we dock between 23:30 and midnight and walk people from the boat to Bacvice Beach Club where they get free VIP entry. Not to mention they get a free shot at all three locations and it’s less than 20 Euros for a ticket. This “Boat Crawl” (mixture of a bar crawl and boat party) literally took partying to the next level and people ate it up. For something like that to get off the ground in its first season was probably the highlight of the season.
Out to Sea definitely stands out from the crowd. What do you think makes it the go-to choice for partygoers?
All of our employees really put an emphasis on the experience of the guests. We genuinely care about all of the people that join us and are super grateful for each and every person. I would say the big thing is that we don’t discriminate, people of all ages, walks of life, cultures are welcome and we want to give them a place to party where they can be themselves and won’t be judged for it. You can come wearing what you want and with whomever you want, people really make friends and it’s amazing to see relationships form from people who met on our boat in the past. Great value for money is definitely another aspect, our drinks are very reasonably priced and we also have more acquired options for those who request it. Lastly we have a very good relationship with many local and foreign run businesses in town and it’s amazing how just being a good person and sending them some business, not wanting anything in return can really benefit yourself.
If Out to Sea had its own theme song, what tune would we be hearing all summer long?
I’m going to choose two here; Firstly I would say Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield. I know it’s currently trending but if you dig through our old stories, we were playing it before it started trending again. It’s such a feel-good tune and the build up perfectly suits the tone and vibes on the boat. Secondly, it’s generic but Gimme Gimme Gimme by ABBA. There is not a day that goes by that we miss this song and also probably not a day that goes by without an ABBA request. This song is the epitome of a European summer and it’s always one of our closing songs to help cap off the day. If it ever plays elsewhere, it instantly brings back memories of the boat parties and it always brings everyone together.
Looking ahead, are there any sneak peaks you can share about what’s next for Out to Sea?
Well we actually just had our opening party and we had a new boat reveal, this new boat can hold 250 people, insane I know. It’s massive and it’s the most beautiful boat ever, we are still working on the layout and are continuously improving things but it is ready to go and to host (hopefully) 200+ parties this summer! We have a few ideas in the works and some really cool offers, things I could never have imagined only a few years ago. This is only our third year running so we aren’t getting too far ahead of ourselves. The most important thing is that we are heavily involved in the day to day running and we believe that this is one of the reasons that the business is successful and having great quality control. Taking that away brings risks that we don’t really want. Lastly I’ll finish with something that’s exciting but not in the same way as the boat party is exciting. I have opened an Udruga, Cisto More, translating to Clean Sea Split.
We realise the negative view that people sometimes have of parties like ours, especially locals and we want to find a way to give back to this place that I now consider my home. We will be making a huge effort to reduce our footprint, make sure no trash is ending up in the ocean and also getting down and dirty on the beaches of Dalmatia to keep this place clean and make what we are doing sustainable and hopefully have a better image to those who potentially have a negative view of what we do.
